“My Mission Is Just to Create a Frame for Her Personality”

F you’ve seen a photo of Amy Schumer recently—and we bet you have, considering the press junket for her movieTrainwreck has landed her on every red carpet, talk show, and entertainment news program out there, as well as the covers of Glamour and GQ—she’s probably wearing Narciso Rodriguez. In the past several weeks, the comedian has stepped out in a number of the designer’s flattering dresses, from a pastel pink three-quarter-sleeve frock for an event at the Apple Store to an über-sexy coral look for the film’s screening. Schumer’s decision to choose both a high fashion designer and many body-conscious outfits is trailblazing not only for comedians, a group not generally known for its fashion chops, but also for women who aren’t sample size. Seeing her looking confident, sexy, and far more stylish than any of her counterparts encourages women everywhere to get inside Schumer’s head and try something different. And sure, a couple of stunning, form-flattering dresses on one actress does not a categorical problem solve, but Schumer and Rodriguez’s collaboration is surely a step in the right direction for bringing some body positivity to Hollywood. 

“I’ve never shied away from curves, so it’s not really a departure from my client list,” Rodriguez told Style.com. “I don’t really ever stop to think about who I dress and who I don’t dress. I think it’s important to dress all women.” Schumer, for her part, was up for taking on the designer’s signature curve-hugging looks. “She reacted well to so many of the things that I presented to her,” he said. “It was a really nice process.” (And while the designer would admit that Schumer said many memorable things to him during their fittings, he would only laughingly note that her quips were “nothing that I could repeat!”)

The final looks Rodriguez crafted for the comedian are unabashedly chic and have a coolly downtown vibe—two concepts you might not initially associate with a woman whose TV show featured her in cat-print pajamas eating spaghetti out of a strainer with her bare hands. But it’s that fearlessness and self-confidence that make her such a force on the red carpet in Rodriguez’s eyes. “I think that comes with a great comfort level with herself and a sense of security. You know, my mission is just to create a frame for her personality,” he offered, later noting that “if you make something for someone and they feel good in it, I think that’s what’s most important. Then they feel good and that’s what comes across.” For him, the hero of their collaboration was the black dress that she wore to Live with Kelly & Michael. “She really liked a stretch-leather dress that I made her, and I really enjoyed watching her model it in the fittings,” he laughed, “so I guess [my favorite] would have to be that because she really appreciated it and she felt great in it, and that always makes me feel good.”
